The TiaTuner program is designed for tuning controllers in Siemens Simatic S7-1200 and S7-1500 programmable logic controllers (PLCs). This program, running on a Windows-based computer (e.g. a laptop), can connect to an S7-1200 or S7-1500 PLC equipped with an OPC UA server and allows tuning of the PID Compact, PID 3Step, and PID Temp controllers. For this purpose, TiaTuner uses the PID controller PIDMAX with a moment autotuner, implemented in the REXYGEN control system.
During testing of automatic controller tuning using Siemens’ TIA Portal development environment, it was found that tuning in the “Fine Tuning” mode is often very time-consuming (especially for slow control processes) and works only within a narrow range of permissible parameters for this mode. In contrast, the PIDMAX block only requires that the control loop starts from a stable or monotonically increasing or decreasing state when tuning begins. The time required to tune a controller using the TiaTuner program is usually several times shorter than the time needed for parameter adjustment in the “Fine Tuning” process.
The gallery includes several screenshots demonstrating the operation of the TiaTuner program. Detailed information is available on request in the program’s user documentation.
Support from the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic
The research and development of the new PID controller with autotuner, PIDMAX, was supported by the project “Automatic Tuning of Controllers in (Nuclear) Power Engineering.” The development of the PIDMAX block utilised the previously developed PID H∞ Designer tool by REX Controls.
